This week I was excited about...

A little 'daycation' with Rich. We slipped away to the other side of the city for a mini day-long holiday and some quality time together away from our usual haunts.

This week I was reminded...

How important a good, wholesome but hearty breakfast is to set you up for the day!

This week I appreciated...

Discovering a brand new, very exciting restaurant.

(More on this in due course)

Having a good old giggle when the Whose Line Is It Anyway boys came to town.

Being given the best bar of chocolate I think I've ever eaten at the end of another 12 hour day in the office.

Quote of the week

This quote comes from the very lovely Sandy from S Marks The Spots who posted it on my Facebook page earlier this week. It came at just the right time when I was having 'one of those days' and it made me smile all day!

I'd love it if one of you could provide a happy, sunny quote for next week's post! If you've got a great one, let me know in the comments below, or on Facebook or Twitter.

Have a great weekend. Wherever you are, I hope the sun is shining!

Review: A 'daycation' at the Doha Mariott Hotel

Sunday, 10 May 2015

So far in 2015, we have enjoyed a long haul trip back home to the UK, two heavenly mini breaks in the region to Muscat and Dubai, and two relaxing 'staycations' in our adopted city of Doha, at the St Regis and the Grand Hyatt. Yup, thus far I think it's pretty safe to say that all vacation bases have been covered. But what happens if you're in desperate need of a break, but only have one day to play with?

There's only one answer in my book: a 'daycation'.

We had seen a voucher in The Entertainer for buy one get one free day passes to The Marriott including use of the hotel's beach and pool. At QAR 250 (GBP 45) for us both, this is a bit of a steal. A little further around the coast from our usual haunts in West Bay, in a part of the city affectionately known as 'the old airport area', this hotel is a place we would usually bypass en route home from the airport, or dismiss in favour of nearby Sharq Village & Spa where we got engaged. I was quite excited to finally visit and see what it was like.

Expecting interiors akin to the clean and airy space of its counterpart, the Marriott Marquis, City Centre, we were a little disappointed to find a rather dated-looking lobby which was lacking in character. Rich stayed at this hotel back in 2011 when he came to Doha to assist in Al Jazeera's production of the Asian Cup, and he thinks things have definitely gone downhill since then. This must be due in part to the growing competition of the booming hotel industry and proliferation of five star resorts in the thriving West Bay area, but it is sad to see a place with so much Doha history (this hotel outdates even the iconic Doha Sheraton which was built in 1979) being left to rack and ruin.

I perked up a little however, when we discovered the gorgeous, bright corridor which led us through the hotel's spa, and out into the sunshine.

The pool area, which was surrounded by relaxing-looking cabanas and comfortable loungers, was heaving, so we followed a palm-lined path down to the quieter haven of the beach.

The yachts of Doha Sailing Club lined the waters in front of us, and past them sat the stunning city skyline.

It was the perfect place to sit back and relax for a few hours, while reading a book and admiring the view.

It was from this spot that I tried to reconcile my thoughts about this hotel. Yes, it is cheap, but given the distance we travelled and the shabby-chic feel, I wouldn't have wanted to pay much more than that to use the facilities for the day. On the other hand, it is a fantastic place to bring children, due to the numerous sports facilities dotted around the place.

Look at the athleticism! @richbyles #fiance #basketball #showingoff

(Adults can obviously get involved too).

My favourite thing about this hotel however, was actually technically not on Marriott soil. About 200 metres offshore is a sand bar which stretches far out into The Corniche. We swum to it through the deep, still waters of the Persian Gulf, and when we found the white sand of the sea floor rushing up to meet us, we put our feet down and stood up. There, right in the middle of the ocean, we walked as if on water, towards the city view in front of us until we found the perfect vantage point from which to sit in the shallows and watch the sun begin to dip behind the city. I obviously have no photos of this moment, but it was just a little bit magical.

We swum back to shore feeling hungry and ready for home. And after a quick stop at the little foyer coffee shop, that's where we went.

Would I return? Probably not. But the Doha Marriott Hotel gave us a couple of really special moments, which will remain forever more in my Doha memory bank.

Do you ever take yourself off for a 'daycation'? Where's your favourite place to go?

This week I was excited about...

Breaking up a heavy working week with lots of fun blogger events, starting with the press launch of Swiss Week at the Grand Hyatt, Doha. You can read all about it here.

This week I was reminded...

About the importance of taking good quality snaps if you want to be a successful blogger. It was back to the Grand Hyatt for a photography workshop hosted by the lovely ladies of Blogging ME and a presentation by the incredibly talented Joe Agdeppa, and while I now know a lot more about framing (you should always apply the rule of thirds) and aperture (set a wide aperture if you want sharp focus on a nearby object and a blurred background), my photography skillz still leave a lot to be desired. I had lots of fun leaning over delicious and rather familiar-looking plates of food from Swiss Week trying to do something arty with my camera all the same.

This week I appreciated...

Dinner at Isaan with one of our favourite Doha couples and fellow about-to-be-weds Rosalyn from Dream Days and 'her Rich'. Yup, I just couldn't keep away from the Grand Hyatt this week!

A spot of naughtiness to lighten the load of a late night in the office.

Heading back to my favourite restaurant in Doha for a 'Come Dine With Me' supper hosted by Ahlan magazine with some fellow Doha bloggers. We sampled some more of Chef Khala's amazing creations and enjoyed chatting about everything from the untapped potential of mid range restaurants and food vans in Qatar to the rather wonderful Gerald's desire to 'be somebody' (to which we concluded he should bring back the bow tie with his own range). I will pop a more in-depth post up soon.

Quote of the week...

I hope you're having a sunny Friday! For all of you that had a Bank Holiday on Monday, high five for four day weeks!

The things I learnt while travelling that I'll never do again

Monday, 4 May 2015

I have always loved the quote, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page". Well, if books are knowledge, then the more I've travelled, the wiser I've certainly become... mainly through learning some very tough lessons while on the road.

Like don't end a perfect week of culture with a stay in a tacky resort...

Just picture it. Myself and my best friends from my Masters degree headed off on a girls' holiday not long after graduation. We chose the glorious Spanish capital of Madrid for our fiesta, and we had a week of perfection in every way imaginable: tapas, churros and history, walks through parks and rowing on lakes.

Unfortunately we thought it would be a GREAT idea to round off this holiday with a short stay in Majorca for a bit of partying...which there is nothing wrong with at all, unless you've kinda run out of money by this point, and wind up staying in a substandard 2* hotel (complete with dubious looking hairs on the sheets) in the centre of the not so lovely holiday resort of Santa Ponsa. I'll let you conjure up the image in your own heads of what this place is like, but let's just say this is the best picture from this part of the holiday...because it's too dark to see very much.

We still managed to have lots of fun, because well, we always do. But we kicked ourselves for choosing to few nights at the back end of the trip slinging back Blue Lagoons in Diva Bar rather than cruising the Gran Via.

Like book your transport and accommodation in advance...

Back in 2005, during my summer hols at Uni, I made the brave decision to travel to Sri Lanka alone to teach in an orphanage for a few weeks. While I was there, I met an extremely fun girl called Nadia, who was on her gap year and took me under her wing for a while on her travels. As a naïve and inexperienced solo traveller, she convinced me that it was totally fine to turn up at a train station, jump on the first train that came along, eventually get off at any destination that happens to take your fancy, and then ask a friendly Tuk-Tuk driver to recommend a hostel for the night. ERROR!

Cue us clambering onto a ridiculously over-crowded train where there were no seats left, and having to sit in the open doorway while the train built up speed and my life rushed before my eyes.

And then staying in a hostel which had no hot running water, no mosquito nets, no cover on the bed and most certainly no A/C!

But it's experiences like these that add to life's rich tapestry, and although I would never do it again, I would also never take it back.

Like check the expiry date of your passport BEFORE you get to the airport....

This experience however, I would take back in a heartbeat. My mum and I had organised a girls' trip to Venice. We'd been talking about it for weeks and I was incredibly excited. We packed our bags, headed to Heathrow, and queued up at passport control, chatting about the week ahead all the way. At the front of the queue I was told in no uncertain terms that my passport had expired ten days ago and there was no way they could let me travel.

Luckily, my wonderful mum reacted in the way that any wonderful mum would. Sensing how terrible I felt about letting her down, rather than berating me, she quickly arranged a last minute staycation. Luckily, we are finally able to look back on this 'incident' and laugh, and we're still talking about making the trip to Venice together one day...

Like take bad TripAdvisor reviews seriously...

The last girls holiday I went on was with my Essex crew to Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Before we departed, I'd read some rather dodgy reviews about the brand new five star resort we'd booked ourselves into, but chose to ignore them, putting them down to 'teething problems'.

Five nights of severe food poisoning later, which culminated in one of my friends being put on a drip in our hotel room by the resident doctor, and we were berating ourselves for not taking the reviews more seriously. A question I only asked myself later was what kind of hotel requires a resident doctor anyway?!

This photo captures us at our happiest (and least green!) of the entire holiday.

And NEVER get into an unmarked taxi with a guy who speaks very little English...

Later in the same holiday when we were feeling well enough to peel ourselves from our sick beds, we headed out into the town for dinner and drinks. The taxi driver that dropped us off promised in broken English that he'd return at an agreed time to pick us up again. Having had our first night 'out' of the holiday, we were in good spirits as we met him to return to the hotel. However, as we were driving along, he suddenly veered off the road onto a dirt track started driving into the desert. We asked him where he was going, and when he didn't answer, we eventually screamed at him to turn the car around. Ten minutes later, after we'd convinced we were being kidnapped and taken off into the desert for God knows what purposes, and I was frantically plotting our escape strategy, we realised that the driver was, in actual fact, just taking us on a short-cut back to the hotel, but simply couldn't find the words to explain himself.

Save yourself a heart attack and stick to marked taxis ladies, and make sure both the driver and yourselves understand each other fully before you set off!

These are just a handful of my travel-related dramas which have taught me important lessons about what not to do in the future. I'm posting this as part of the travel link up with Emma, Kelly, Rebecca and their guest host Shikha and the topic is 'Things You'd Never Do Again.'

Are there any nail biting experiences that you have experienced while travelling that have led you to think "never again!!!"?

Review: Swiss Week at The Grand Hyatt Hotel, Doha

Sunday, 3 May 2015

When I think of Switzerland, the first things that come to mind are breathtaking Alpine vistas, skiing and après ski, very happy people, high net wealth and dodgy Swiss bank accounts. I seem to have some fixed ideas about this beautiful country, and yet (other than knowing that they consume a lot of cheese) I have very little clue about its cuisine.

So when The Grand Hyatt Doha invited me to the media launch of Swiss Gastronomic Week at The Grill, I jumped on the opportunity to go along and try some authentic Swiss dishes for myself.

One of the best things about The Grill is that getting there requires walking the length and breadth of the hotel...

Past interesting water features lit up by twinkly lights.

And through the cavernous space of the ground floor lobby. It's almost impossible to walk past this beautiful room without stopping for a photograph.

Inside The Grill, the room was already buzzing with music and chatter when we arrived. Rich quickly sought out the very lovely Nigel Spackman, ex-football manager and former player, and now a BeIn Sports pundit, who introduced us to one of the Hyatt's top chefs.

Aside from the usual culinary crew, the Grand Hyatt has also flown in guest chef, Sebastian Wirsching from the Park Hyatt Zurich for the occasion. This means that the resulting array of delicacies have the usual attention to detail that I have come to know and expect from The Grill, but with a touch of Swiss authenticity.

Our favourite stand was, of course, the cheese stand.

Sweet mother of cheeses, there was a great selection!

But just one plateful was not enough for us cheese fiends. We also followed our noses to a half-wheel of raclette which was being heated in the traditional way, and couldn't resist another plate of cheese melted over pickles and potatoes.

We took our little dishes of heaven outside to eat on the terrace with a glass of red.

But we didn't sit for too long, because we didn't want to miss out on the yodeling coming from the Swiss musicians inside.

During the evening, I was excited to bump into fellow Doha-based expat blogger Noemi who writes two fantastic blogs that I have been reading for a while now. Check them out at: Pinnay Flying High and The Greek Pinnay.

Do you want to know how we managed to find each other?! She recognised Rich from my blog. Unbelievable. He is never going to let me hear the end of this.

The pièce de résistance of the evening was , as always, The Grill's dessert table which always makes me feel like a kid in a very big candy shop.

If you're interested in popping along then Swiss Gastronomic Week will be running every night from 6.30-midnight until Thursday. There is a choice of an a la carte, or a set menu worth QAR 250. Be sure to book, because it's likely to get busy!

Have you been to any of the other themed weeks or brunches offered by The Grand Hyatt? Which has been your favourite?

We were guests of the Grand Hyatt Doha this time.

FYS Guest Post: The Wedding Files on Dream Days 3

Saturday, 2 May 2015

I can't believe that another month has rushed by. It seems like only yesterday that I was sitting down to write my last post for Dream Days about my wedding inspiration and ideas. Now we're a whole 30 days closer to the wedding and I'm not sure I'm feeling 30 days more organised!!

Today I'm chatting about my wedmin woes, which is rather fitting for my week of moaning! Head on over to Dream Days here for the post, and look out for Rosalyn's post a little later in the day.

This week I was excited by...

Well, not that much if I'm completely honest! You may have read my last post which was basically a big old moan about what a terrible week I've had (with a few coping strategies thrown in for good measure). Luckily, a friendly invitation from the Grand Hyatt Doha pinged into my inbox early in the week and on Thursday evening I found myself at the media launch of Swiss Gastronomic Week, where I caught up with old friends, met some new lovely faces and gorged on lots and lots of cheese while listening to some pretty impressive yodelling. It was impossible to be sad after all this.

This week I was reminded...

About the sheer resilience of people when faced with tragedy. In the wake of the earthquake in Nepal at the end of last week, there have been so many wonderful stories about communities coming together for good and miracles are still occurring every day. You can read some heart-lifting stories here and here. But for every positive story, there are thousands of devastating ones. If you would like to help then The Guardian has written a great article about the ways that you can have the greatest impact.

This week I appreciated...
